Your Year-End Financial Plan Checklist - Part 6

Paul Brown | Dec 8, 2025

Being underinsured can leave you exposed at the worst possible time, while being over insured—or overpaying for coverage—can quietly drain resources that could be put to better use. Having the right mix of insurance coverage is essential, and year-end is an ideal time to make sure your policies are aligned with your needs and your long-term plan.

A simple review now can help you confirm that your policies are appropriately structured, competitively priced, and coordinated across your broader financial plan. Taking time to revisit your coverages each year across life, property & casualty, and health policies and strengthen your overall financial foundation and set you up with confidence for the year ahead. Here are a few key areas to focus on:

• Update property coverages

Rising real estate and replacement costs may mean your existing limits no longer reflect today’s realities.

• Review liability protection

Make sure auto, home, and umbrella policies provide adequate coverage given your assets and income, especially if you also have rental or business properties.

• Evaluate deductibles

Adjusting deductibles can improve cost efficiency while still keeping risk at a comfortable level. Also, bundling coverages or reaching a certain age may qualify for additional discounts to premiums.

• Assess life coverages

Ensure life insurance policies align with your family needs and objectives. Increase or reducing coverage amounts may be in order, depending on what season of life you’re in.

• Review health, disability, and long term care coverages

Verify that benefits match your needs and that you’re fully aware of upcoming changes in premiums, networks, or out-of-pocket limits.

• Compare premiums and explore discounts

Markets change; a quick review may reveal significant opportunities to save without sacrificing protection. Bundling coverages and a change of age can lead to sizeable discounts.

A little attention now can go a long way later.
